Precautions
Handling and application details worth knowing before you start a project, especially on jobs involving fasteners, adjacent surfaces, adhesives, or unusual wood types.
What does CUTEKĀ®’s liability coverage not include?
CUTEKĀ® stands behind correct use of its products, but coverage doesn’t extend to problems caused by applying the wrong color to a substrate, coating wood above 17% moisture content, or other departures from the labeled instructions. When in doubt, follow the application and moisture guidance on the product label and TDS.
Why does color and weathering vary from project to project?
Wood itself varies ā species, density, and grain all differ from board to board, and exposure conditions (sun, rain, wind, orientation) differ from project to project too. Because of that, clear and Colortoned CUTEKĀ® Extreme can fade, wear, and weather at noticeably different rates even on similar-looking wood.
Can I mix a non-CUTEKĀ® colorant into CUTEKĀ® Extreme?
No. Only CUTEKĀ® Colortones are formulated to work with CUTEKĀ® Extreme. They’re proprietary and aren’t designed or tested for compatibility with any third-party stain, dye, or tint.
Why do two premixed samples of the same Colortone shade sometimes look different?
Colortone is a natural pigment product, and normal batch-to-batch variation can produce subtle differences between premixed samples of the same named shade. Always test on your actual project wood rather than relying solely on a color chart or a sample can from a different batch.
What weather and temperature conditions should I avoid when applying?
Skip application if rain is likely within 48 hours of coating, since the oil needs that window to diffuse before it gets diluted or washed off. On the cold end, CUTEKĀ® Extreme can be applied down to about 40°F, but it goes on more evenly if warmed slightly beforehand ā colder oil is thicker and penetrates less readily.
What kind of surface contamination should I check for before coating?
Wood needs to be free of chemical residue and shouldn’t have picked up dust, dirt, or other environmental contaminants right before coating. Anything sitting on the surface when you apply can interfere with even penetration and diffusion.
Can I coat wood that was previously finished with a natural or vegetable oil product?
It’s often problematic. Many natural and vegetable oil finishes cross-link and cure into a barrier as they age, and that barrier can block CUTEKĀ® Extreme from penetrating the way it’s designed to. Test a small area first if you’re not sure what was used previously.
Can hidden mold or fungus in the wood affect the finish?
Yes. Wood can carry mold spores that aren’t visible to the naked eye even when it looks clean, and coating over them can allow dark staining to show up later. If a board looks suspect, it’s worth addressing before coating rather than after.
Will CUTEKĀ® products corrode or stain nails, screws, or other fasteners?
Hot-dipped galvanized, silicon bronze, stainless steel, and copper fasteners are all fine with CUTEKĀ® products. The one exception is lead flashing, which a Colortoned CUTEKĀ® Extreme finish can lightly stain on contact.
Does CUTEKĀ® Extreme stop wood from leaching tannins onto nearby surfaces?
It reduces leaching significantly but doesn’t eliminate it entirely. Exterior painted or plastered surfaces positioned below CUTEKĀ®-coated wood can still pick up staining from leachate running down from above, so plan drainage and runoff paths accordingly.
What is cross diffusion, and when should I be careful about it?
Cross diffusion is when oil from CUTEKĀ®-coated wood migrates into an absorbent material it’s directly touching ā drywall, plasterboard, sheetrock, plaster, and similar porous substrates are the main risk. Wherever coated wood butts up against one of these materials, there’s a chance of diffusion into that adjoining surface.
How do I protect adjacent surfaces like concrete or glass during application?
CUTEKĀ® products are straightforward to apply, but oil that contacts concrete, stone, or similar surfaces can leave a stain, so mask or cover anything you don’t want coated before you start. Wipe up any accidental contact right away rather than letting it sit.
Is CUTEKĀ® Extreme safe to use on decorative plywood?
Generally yes, but on plywood with very thin decorative veneers, coating can sometimes make the darker glue lines underneath the top veneer show through. Test a small area first if you’re working with a thin-veneer product.
Can applying CUTEKĀ® Extreme loosen knots in the wood?
It’s possible. Properly applied CUTEKĀ® Extreme diffuses deeply and displaces moisture in the wood, and that moisture reduction can occasionally loosen knots that were being held in place partly by trapped moisture.
Can CUTEKĀ® products be used on food-preparation surfaces?
No. CUTEKĀ® products aren’t intended for surfaces where food is directly prepared.
Will spills or household chemicals stain a CUTEKĀ®-coated surface?
They can. Wine, contaminated cleaning water, and other strongly staining or chemically active liquids can leave a visible mark if they sit on a CUTEKĀ®-coated surface, so it’s worth blotting up spills promptly the same way you would on any oiled wood.
Will CUTEKĀ® Extreme affect adhesives, rubber, or Butynol?
It can. Many silicone and rubber-based adhesives have poor resistance to oils and solvents, so CUTEKĀ® Extreme can soften or dissolve them if they come into contact ā test any glue or adhesive used in joinery before committing to a design. The same goes for rubber and Butynol surfaces: wipe off any contact promptly to avoid damage. If you’re coating wood on a garage door assembled with a rubber-based adhesive, running a bead of adhesion sealer along the back of the door beforehand helps protect that joint.
Does CUTEKĀ® Extreme replace the need for pressure-treated or preservative-treated wood?
No. CUTEKĀ® is designed to improve dimensional stability and extend service life, but it isn’t a substitute for licensed wood preservation or treatment processes where those are required.

How do I mix Colortone into CUTEKĀ® Extreme correctly?
Stir the Colortone thoroughly before adding it to the can of clear CUTEKĀ® Extreme, then keep stirring the combined mixture with a flat stirrer throughout application. Pigment can settle, so re-stir periodically rather than just once at the start.
How often should I plan to recoat?
Reapply clear or Colortoned CUTEKĀ® Extreme whenever it’s needed to keep the wood’s protection and appearance where you want it ā there’s no fixed interval, since sun exposure, foot traffic, and weather all affect the timeline differently from one project to the next.
Can I use CUTEKĀ® Extreme on bamboo?
Bamboo behaves differently from wood and needs closer attention. A finish that holds up well on wood for 6ā12 months has, in observed cases, failed on bamboo in as little as 12 weeks, so plan on a shorter maintenance cycle and more frequent inspection if you’re coating bamboo.
What are the two broad categories of wood discoloration?
Microbial discoloration comes from fungi or bacteria active in the wood. Non-microbial discoloration comes from mechanical damage, chemical reactions, or photochemical (UV/light-driven) changes. Telling them apart matters because the fix is different in each case.
Why do stains sometimes bleed through onto other surfaces?
Compounds already in the wood, or oil that’s diffused through it, can migrate into whatever the wood is touching or draining onto ā which is the same leaching and cross-diffusion behavior covered above. Keeping absorbent materials and painted surfaces clear of direct contact and runoff reduces the risk.
Why does wood move, cup, or crack in the first place?
Wood is hygroscopic ā it constantly takes in and gives off moisture as vapor depending on the surrounding air. That ongoing exchange is what drives cupping, warping, and splitting over time, and it’s the core problem CUTEKĀ®’s penetrating-oil approach is built to manage.
Which direction does wood shrink the most, and by how much?
Tangentially ā the direction that runs along the growth rings ā is where wood shrinks the most, typically in the range of 2ā10% depending on species. That’s also the direction most responsible for cupping and other shape distortion as moisture content changes.
